Jane Stobart RE
My prints are inspired by the subject of people at work. I have spent many years drawing in some truly amazing places such as a bell foundry, construction sites, a tube train maintenance depot, sewage pumping stations, etc. The drawings I make form the bases of all of my ideas and images. ‘Construction’ depicts a series of silhouetted workmen balancing weightlessly atop black line; the scene, a sequence of activity frozen in woodcut and set against a backdrop of luminous grey. Anonymous and purposeful, the workers communicate through gesture alone, conversation a series of choreographed movements.
Outstretched hands and buckled posture seem to carry the weight of the sky above in ‘Nightwork II’; body ablaze in bleached white and features blackened into ambiguity. The surrounding scene is alive with line and motion; a force seemingly restrained by the spread of both hands raised before it.
