George Tute’s canvases are dense with symbolism. Stories slowly unfold as the viewer becomes immersed in Tute’s visual language, which reveals layer upon layer of hidden meaning. There is a sense of familiarity in his work, as if the richly coloured imagery has been extracted from a personal memory. A dream-like obscurity gently distorts reality in Tute’s paintings, inviting us into fantastical worlds drawn from literature, mythology and historical art reference, as well as from the compelling curiosities of the artist’s own imagination.
