Norma Stephenson PS
I slowly feel my way into the image, drawing into it with Conte and enjoying a ‘wandering line’ until it feels comfortable and balanced, with the right proportion of busy and calm. [Norma Stephenson]
Born in Hawick, Norma Stephenson spent her early life in Sheffield before attending Sheffield Art College to study Fine Art and attaining a bursary for her outstanding skill. Her fondness of the North West Coast of Scotland along with her childhood largely spent living on the edge of the Peak District continue to enrich her adoration for the British landscapes.

A heavenly glow features frequently in Stephenson’s pieces, elegantly highlighting the peaks of a mountainous skyline, while directional marks in works such as ‘Bowland landscape’, depict a strong breeze whipping through cloud and plantation beneath; the energy behind her mark a signature element to her practice.
The Forest of Bowland and Dales of North Yorkshire come alive in soft pockets of colour, as pastel blues sit beside bursts of forest green. Line informs us of perspective, threading its way through an array of luscious hues. In ‘Land lines’, black scores cross the canvas, a trickle of stormy grey forming its backdrop.
Stephenson is highly regarded for her unique use of pastel, winning awards such as the The Pastel Society Award and The Artist Magazine Award, along with attaining first prize in the well established Windsor and Newton award.
