Melissa Kiernan has drawn her references for Bartholomew from biblical and medieval art and one of Christ’s twelve apostles. She has given Bartholomew ‘hair’ in the form of stylised, round globes with a dark umber matt glaze. His skirt, which has a rich red glaze, references the anatomical drawings of George Stubbs. These are not transfers; Melissa uniquely screen prints the image directly onto porcelain slabs before cutting it out and laying it onto the skirt. She then fills in the area around the print with more porcelain before the piece undergoes a final firing.
